Du gamla, Du fria (“Thou ancient, Thou free”) is the de facto national anthem of Sweden. It was originally named Sång till Norden (“Song to the Nordic”), and the first words of its lyrics has just been assumed also to be the title over the years. Although the Swedish constitution makes no mention of a national anthem, the song enjoys universal recognition and is used, for example, at sporting events. It first began to win recognition as a patriotic song in the 1890s, and the issue was debated back and forth up until the 1930s. In 1938, the Swedish public service radio company Sveriges Radio started playing it at the end of transmitting in the evenings, which really marked the beginning of the “almost official” status as national anthem the song has since then. Despite a widespread belief that it was adopted as the national anthem in 1866, no such recognition has ever been officially accorded. In 2000 a Riksdag committee rejected, as “unnecessary”, a proposal to give the song official status. However, there have since been repeated motions with a similar intent. The original lyrics were written by Richard Dybeck in 1844. Swedish composer Edvin Kallstenius arranged the traditional melody from Västmanland. Dybeck himself originally wrote the beginning as “Du gamla, Du friska” (Thou ancient, Thou hale), but in the late 1850´s personally changed the lyrics to “Du gamla, Du fria” (Thou ancient, Thou free). The song was already published in several song books and sung with “Du

@mrezyka this IS the way it should be you ass .. you like getting screwed by banks ? You are a status quo JERK -face it unless you are rich then there is no other way to make life affordable for the middle and lower classes. But you could care less . .go pay Bank of America their interest and fees while they sit on OUR bailout money. I know why you say that . .cause it is NOT main street USA . . hey idiot there is a world out there and SOME people are trying NOT to FUCK their neighbor !

The creation of not-for-profit member-owned banks is certainly a worthy idea.
At the same time, JAK bank and other similar institutions are focused on mitigation rather than solution to the cause of debt-dependency in societies. Equally or more critical is ending the privatization of location rental values. CLTs take some land out of the market to make housing affordable, but this is not enough. Societies must collect land rent to end land speculation and lower land costs significantly.

I suppose some do. But pension plan funds are often invested in shady companies, or activities that I wouldn’t want to support. Social security I believe would be just for folks on the lower income bracket, and some self employed folks don’t use the public pension option but still need to invest for retirement.

Islamic banking and economic system is the only viable alternative to the sickness of the global (western) financial debacle being played over the past century!

dj4monie January 28, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Don’t US retires get pensions and SS? Why couldn’t they fund the system the same way working people do? Many times they own their homes as well and no car payments usually,

Why wouldn’t it work?

deadcoldstars January 28, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Inspiring stuff!

craftthefuture January 28, 2012 at 10:11 pm

It’s so important to open this conversation. We don’t know how to live without interest & debt. In light of current economies, transitioning toward this model may benefit both ppl & the planet.

But what happens in this system for retirees? Perhaps a hybrid system. Reasonable interest rates could afford people their retirement via modest investment, but reduce the interest costs embedded in prices, allowing for savings or lower wages/less employment.

PolackenSWE January 29, 2012 at 6:48 am

@KINGDINGLEDORK omg sweden is one of the largest music producers in comparision to its population so just stfu we are the greatest country in the world and im proud of being a Swede.För sverige i tiden!

Greetings from the USA! I’m currently teaching myself Swedish since my ancestors came to the US from Sweden in the 1700′s. May our alliance live on through the generations! :)

KINGDINGLEDORK January 29, 2012 at 9:12 am

I’m surprised that the Swedes actually have music…I thought they all lived in huts and ate twigs and berries. Sweden is a thrid world nation after all. ONLY THE USA is MIGHTY and STRONG!

@modena90 Förstår dig men Om vi skulle enas med norge och danmark (pg.a vi snackar nästan samma språk) Skulle Scadinavium vara mycet större. Gillar din idé

TheKamikazeen January 29, 2012 at 10:48 am

@AlexPreachesTruth There are much worse sins than sodomy, such as wearing mixed fabrics: Leviticus 19:19. Or sitting where menstruating women has been sitting: Leviticus 15:19-30. I bet you’re atleast guilty to one of these sins, in other words: see you in hell.
