About the freezing i think because of your networking communications. When a computer connected to a router it always connected a workgroup or a domain if you router have been setup to that way. But if your router are using a factory settings it probaly connected to a workgroup settings.

If you really want to transfer a file from old to new you should transfer it like old days. Unplug the hardrive from your old computer and setup the jumper to secondary or slave and plug to the new computer. Just start normally and you will see a new hardrive connected to your new pc.

From there you just drag or copy and paste from old pc to the new hardrive. When all done you can bring your old pc to computer shops and ask them to check why its freezing. It will take a week to check up. But you already transfer your old file to the new pc so you should not worry about your important files
