I’ve raved for years about how much I love Pimsleur language courses. I truly believe they are the best way for a new learner of a foreign language to speak and understand the spoken word, traditionally the weakest abilities among American language students. The method used in Pimsleur allows a learner to be able to achieve a more “fluent” feeling when conversing, at least for the vocabulary covered in the courses, because one’s recall is trained to work much faster than if one had to think out a translation. Those who sell Rosetta Stone like to point out that Pimsleur is an all-audio course and therefore does not teach you how to read and write. This is true, but in my humble opinion, the level of speaking and listening one can attain through Pimsleur makes it worth the money, even alongside whatever other resources a learner wishes to use.
As far as weaknesses go, Pimsleur German III is the weakest of the German offerings, and therefore I give it 4 stars instead of 5. The German I, II, and Plus courses were all produced during this decade with the intent of being distributed on CD or other digital means. Conversely, German III was recorded in the 1990s, and very obviously there was some sort of tape-to-digital transfer in order to make the CDs, and the audio quality is therefore quite medicore in comparison. Some of the speakers (specifically the female German speaker and the German-speaking “teacher”) do not speak nearly as clearly as their counterparts on the other courses. And because these lessons are from an older edition than the other courses, there are some continuity issues with phrases that hadn’t been learned yet in German II being presented as if they had, as well as phrases that were already taught in German II but are presented here as if they are new. I think German II and German Plus contain the largest amounts of vocabulary, and the use of interval recall isn’t as nuanced and mature in German III.
Obviously, all of those problems would be resolved with the production of an updated edition of German III, and I truly hope one is currently in the works, if one isn’t already available. However, even with this older edition, learning still happens rapidly and easily.

Move me momma! Just to jump right in and say it like it is. We all know that there are many different types of motivation, but the type that we are concerned with is intrinsic verses extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to the desire to do something that pleases you and makes you pat yourself on the back. Most studies have shown it to be much more effective in long-term language learning than extrinsic motivation (for an external reward such as impressing the boss or your peers). Unfortunately, most of us are not lucky enough to hire a personal pep squad or self-improvement coach to keep us motivated. Yup, you are going to have to find the power within yourself. It seems that to become fluent in German will take time and perseverance, so how can you stay motivated?
1. Fraternal Twins Separated At Birth
Yes, the process of learning German can be very stressful but keep in mind the cool thing about German is that modern German and modern English both originated from the common Germanic ancestor language and despite their distinct differences, the two languages share many similarities in both vocabulary and grammar. Also, German is spelled phonetically. This means that once you learn learn german quick the system of sounds, it is easy to predict how the spoken word is written and how the written word is pronounced. Know your German ABCs and you will be better equipped to learn to speak German quickly.
2. Oktoberfest Anyone?
If your ultimate goal is to learn to speak German fluently, then it is important to know that you will become more fluent quickly if you maximize your language exposure. You can start by simply practicing the language with a classmate outside of class. You can befriend native speakers in your community or attend a local foreign language conversation hour, if one exists. Rent a German DVD, or listen to authentic German audio or video online. Or you could attend your local Oktoberfest or plan a trip to attend the world famous Munich Oktoberfest. The first the first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810 and lasted 6 days. The festivities were in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. In Munich the “die Wiesen” (as the locals call it) starts around late September and lasts for sixteen days up to the first Sunday in October. The festival is a vibrant venue where you can eat sauerkraut, drink German beer, practice your German and expose yourself to Bavarian culture.
3. The Gift Of The Gab
Whenever possible, speak German aloud rather than reciting it silently to yourself. Say vocabulary words out loud, read passages in the text aloud, and do pronunciation activities orally. Transferring language from your mind to your mouth is a skill that requires a great deal of practice. And you should practice German actively frequently.
The process of learning German can be very stressful, and the impact of your own positive or negative attitudes can be critical to your learning. I will probably repeat a lot of what others have said, but here goes. I think the real strength of these courses is that they get you to converse. You practice conversation. You talk, you listen. Will you learn lots of vocabulary? No. Will you learn all the grammar rules? No. Can you learn a language with only these courses? Of course not. You will need other materials, courses, books, whatever. But they are another tool in your toolbox to help you achieve your goal. What they give you is practice at speaking real conversations. And you will pick up some vocabulary and grammar along the way, what you need to succeed in these lessons.
I’ve been through all 4 levels and found them all great. Including level 4 (German Plus). This one has a bad rap, I think mostly because it’s shorter than the rest. And certainly some of the new vocabulary is quite focused on one topic. But I found it added a lot of new conversational situations, and a lot of new grammar. Do you learn words that the average tourist doesn’t need? Sure, but if you were just the average tourist, would you be buying these? We are only talking about a dozen or so words, it’s not like your being forced to learn hundreds of words you’ll never use.
Are they perfect? No, there are inconsistencies, there are silly little things here and there that I would call “editing” mistakes. And I really wish they’d give up the pretension that you only need to do each lesson once. I had to do each one at least 3 times before I could move on. But they are great for what they are. If you want to practice conversations, this is for you.

I haven’t tried this product but I did major in German and have studied about 8 languages (at different levels). I have the Spanish version 9, which uses the same teaching techniques. (Check out my review of that, which goes into detail about program features and quirks.)
It looks like this is not the latest version, which is Version 10. According to the TellMeMore site, which has a tour, they did a major rewrite of the program in the process of making it compatible with Windows 7. However, the language itself hasn’t changed, so this version is still useful and a LOT less expensive than version 10.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I think it offers a great introduction to the language. It covers all the basics and many fine points of grammar for this language and offers frequent passages in German to practice translating and understanding. These passages reflect the chapter lessons quite well and the later ones are interesting. Grammar is made comprehensible. I didn’t always find it easy to find a grammar passage that I remembered and needed to review although overall the major points are well indexed.
Help answer the question about learn simple german Best way to learn a new language from a book?

I am hoping to take an actual class as soon as I get there.Right learn simple german now in the book I am getting into things that are hard to remember just by reading. I found this product to be simply tedious and annoying. I’ve learned a little german through Rosetta Stone german for dummies, and wanted to be able to become atleast proficient in german. With all the praise this product got i thought it would be incredibly good. However when i started using this program it would start u off with vocabulary that you’ve never learned and when you use the translation key it gives you five or so translations for each word, making it even more confusing, and then you would get crossword puzzles that included tons of words that the program hasn’t even taught you yet, so i would try to look them up, but many times i would not be able to find the right word to fit the number of spaces, and even if i did, i would rarely remember what the word was. Then there were these exercises where you would have to type what the speaker was saying down: first they spoke way too quickly for somebody learning the language, and second, if u had one little tiny mistake in how you typed the sentence (you forgot to capatalize a letter, forgot the period, spelt a word a tiny bit wrong) it would mark the ENTIRE sentence wrong, they also used many words that you’ve never learned yet, and i don’t get how hearing words that you don’t know is going to help. Also if you were trying to find any words in the dictionary you would have wait a minute or two for it to load and then search for your word, and then go back to your excersize that you would now have to start all over again. Plus it would also give you grammar excercises on grammar its never taught you. The entire program never really teaches you anything unless you spend a long time trying to find what you want in the grammar excercises and memorize them and memorize the dictionary which is a complete pain. I was frustrated so much by this program that i emailed the company to ask where it teaches you the vocabulary, and she just said it teaches you as you go along, which doesn’t happen at all.
In short, save your money even a simple book like Barron’s Learn German the fast and fun way for $18 is much more effective at teaching you german then tell me more german.

So it’s just not what you know but how well you handle and explain it to people.
No matter german learning course how “good” you think you are you will not get the marks you feel you deserve if can’t communicate well with colleagues or clients. Otherwise others who may not be as capable as you, but who have better marketing skills might beat you to the jobs or work you want. There are opportunities in industry. But there are also challenges and competition. In such a competitive environment, perception often reigns supreme.
If your professional competencies are similar to those of other candidates then how do you differentiate yourself? You claim to be a technical wizard. The problem however, and this is a big however, is how do I know if you are good if you can’t sell what you have - yourself or your ideas? Your certifications and previous work experience are important. But the issue at stake is this: can you convince the interviewer or clients that you will solve their problems and deliver value? At our soft skills training in mumbai, we use several techniques to empower you, to improve your soft skills and deliver learnings in soft skills that last a lifetime.
4. Soft skills not only improve your career, they also offer personal growth: Still wondering “why soft skills?? Haven’t I worked hard enough on my academics?” Interestingly, the improving soft skills also empowers you by building flexibility into your future career plans. How? Most soft skills are regarded as transferable skills, e.g. communication, project management, business and team work, which are needed in nearly all aspects of life, not just for your career alone. You need to grow not just as a professional but also as a person. Yes! Improving soft skills will even improve the way to handle your our loved ones – your elders, your friends - your entire personal world!
